CAPNO cloud-based diagnostic and condition tracking system
Review of the devices and the app
The CAPNO system is an innovative capnograph diagnostic method and measuring device based on capnographic procedures and self-learning evaluation software applications for the treatment of asthma and COPD, which process the patient’s measured results with an innovative new method.
Capnographs can measure the change in the pressure curve of exhaled CO2 gas and draw conclusions about the patient’s condition:

The three main elements of the CAPNO system are capnograph meters, a communication module for the safe transmission of measurement data, and a central software system supporting data analysis and diagnosis.
We have developed two types of capnograph meters: the more robust clinical capnograph unit capable of measuring more health parameters, and the simpler home-use meter (HomeCapno).
CAPNO clinical capnograph measurement unit modules:
- CAPNO clinical base unit: data collector and transmission,
- VCap sensor box with time-based mainstream CO2 and flow sensor (volumetric capnograph),
- SpO2 blood oxygen level meter.

The measurement data are transmitted by the base clinical unit via the Internet to the central server application.
A preprocessing procedure qualifies the measurement data on the server, stores them, and then displays the measurement capnograms and qualification results online on the terminal of the doctor or assistant performing the measurement.

The HomeCapno measuring unit consists of
- sensor box with time-based mainstream CO2 sensor, Bluetooth communication,
- Pulse oximeter with Bluetooth communication,
- HomeCapno app for smartphones.

The smartphone application transmits the HomeCapno measurement data to the central server application, which, after the prompt evaluation of the measurement data, sends feedback to the patient’s phone, informing her/him about her/his condition and possible needed actions.
The central software system ensures the reception, evaluation pre-processing, storage, management and analysis of measurement data. The measurement data can be analyzed visually, based on the shape of capnograph curves and the numerical results provided by the preprocessing algorithms. Breathing stages can be selected, which can be investigated in more detail.

A clinical examination may consist of several measurements, either stress-less or stressful measurements. The calculated parameters of these measurements can also be analyzed in relation to each other. Examinations of the patient are comparable, providing important information about changes in the patient’s condition.
The novelty of the system is the volumetric sensor configuration for measuring the expiratory CO2 gas pressure of patients and the calculation algorithms developed for it. The volumetric capnograph meter allows you to measure additional breathing characteristics compared to time-based CO2 meters, and last but not least, to analyze them. In addition to the visual wavelet technique that helps diagnosis, the use of a machine learning solution using neural networks is novel.
The development of the HomeCapno capnograph meter provides healthcare with a telemedicine solution that can track patients’ changes compared to clinical trials, and the system is also capable of alerting in critical cases.
